I have decided to look at the opening titles of Spiderman 2 hoping this exercise helps me to see the many different ways opening titles can be shown in thriller films. This sequence is very different from the traditional type of title sequence as no narrative/storyline is shown:
The animation at the very beginning informs the audience of who has produced the film they are about to see. The comic book effect reminds the audience where the story originates from; it also quickly flashes many other different stories from Marvel. The use of 3D lines constantly gliding throughout the frame creates an effect of pieces of broken glass; it also reminds the audience of Spiderman's web. The special effects of the titles and the 'mis en scene' instantly draws the audience into the film and indicates to them that the thriller will be action packed and very exciting. The colours (mainly blue and red) shows the audience the colours of the protagonists' outfit which draws them in further. The music soundtrack is memorable and starts during the film company name to create a sound bridge.
The opening titles refresh the memory of the audience by summarising what happened in the previous film. In addition the main characters are shown in the title sequence. I believe introducing the characters in the titles sequence is essential as it allows the audience to step into the world of the characters from the moment the thriller starts. I hope to achieve this in our title sequence. For example, in Spiderman 2 we are shown the antagonist in the first couple of minutes. Here are some stills from this title sequence to illustrate this:
